Whether you're withdrawing cash, checking your balance, or making a deposit, ATM transactions have become a routine part of everyday life. Unfortunately, scammers know this and are constantly looking for new ways to take advantage of unsuspecting consumers. By staying alert and following a few smart habits, you can help protect yourself from fraud. Here are 12 simple ways to stay safe the next time you use an ATM.
1. Look for recent device modifications. Before inserting your card, take a quick look at the ATM. Bulky card readers, loose keypads, unusual attachments, fresh glue, tape, or parts that appear different from the rest of the machine could be signs of a skimming device. Criminals use these devices to capture card information and PINs.
2. Check for hidden cameras. Scammers may install tiny hidden cameras near the keypad to record your PIN as you enter it. Look around the card slot, brochure holders, and signage for anything that seems out of place. Legitimate security cameras are typically larger, clearly visible, and positioned to monitor the area rather than the keypad.
3. Cover the PIN pad with your other hand to keep your transaction safe from prying eyes.
4. Look for suspicious individuals. Be aware of your surroundings. Individuals lingering near an ATM without conducting a transaction may be watching customers enter PINs or looking for opportunities to steal information. If someone makes you uncomfortable, leave and use another ATM.
5. Do not share your PIN with anyone you don’t want using your card (and that should be a very small circle). If you write down your PIN, keep it in a secure location away from the card - don’t carry it in your wallet or record it in your phone!
6. ATM location. Choose ATMs located in well-lit areas with good visibility and regular traffic. ATMs attached to financial institutions are often monitored and maintained more closely than standalone machines in isolated locations.
7. If you have trouble with an ATM, go to the nearest bank branch or use another ATM. Do not let strangers “help” you with the transaction.
8. Avoid ATMs in tourist hotspots like shopping malls - these high traffic areas make it easier for thieves to work.
9. Monitor your account. Review your account activity frequently through online or mobile banking. Early detection of unauthorized transactions can help limit losses and speed up the fraud resolution process.
10. Enable account alerts. Many financial institutions offer text or email alerts for purchases, withdrawals, and account activity. These notifications can help you identify suspicious transactions as soon as they occur.
11. Remember that POS terminals, gas station consoles, and other payment locations are just as vulnerable as standalone ATMs.
12. Whenever possible, process your debit card transaction as a “credit” transaction. You will be prompted to sign for it rather than enter a PIN that could be seen by the next person in line.
While ATM fraud techniques continue to evolve, a few extra moments of awareness can go a long way toward protecting your money and personal information. By staying alert, safeguarding your PIN, and regularly monitoring your accounts, you can reduce your risk of becoming a victim. If something doesn't look right, trust your instincts and use a different ATM.
