Lighthouse of Oakland County’s focus for their 30th Annual 5K Hunger WalkAuburn Hills, MI, April 26, 2012 – Celebrating 30 years of walking to help end hunger is Lighthouse of Oakland County’s focus for their 30th Annual 5K Hunger Walk on Saturday, May 5th in Waterford. The event will be held at Oakland Community College’s Highland Lakes Campus with registration beginning at 8:00 a.m.

Genisys Credit Union is the Presenting Sponsor and has donated $5,000 to help fight hunger by giving the gift of hope to families in need and the entire southeastern Michigan region.

“The Walk is a great way to increase awareness and tie several communities together in an effort to fight hunger,” said Jackie Buchanan, CEO. “Everyone has something they can give, and being able to make a difference on a local level is extremely rewarding.”

Hunger Walk helps support Lighthouse of Oakland County’s year-round food pantry program. Every month, over 800 families turn to Lighthouse to keep food on the table. More than 65,000 Oakland County residents live below the poverty level, and one out of four children in Michigan doesn’t get enough to eat. The Hunger Walk is Lighthouse’s largest event-driven fundraiser of the year that helps move people to self-sufficiency, one step at a time.

“We’ve held the Hunger Walk in a few different areas over the years in hopes of promoting the event to area residents who may not be familiar with our organization,” said John Ziraldo, Lighthouse of Oakland County CEO. “It’s a great way to get active and share some time with loved ones to support a great cause.”

Together, hundreds of walkers will march to help end hunger in our communities. Join Genisys in making a difference! Become involved by walking, pledging, sponsoring, donating, volunteering or organizing a team.
